NIGERIA’S MILITARY INTERVENTION IN ECOWAS SUB-REGION (LIBERIA AND SIERRA LEONE)

From a certain viewpoint, Nigeria, despite its financial and other problems, could not and cannot afford to be aloof to grave problems in the ECOWAS sub-region particularly and in Africa in general. Self-interest and the derived sense of regional responsibilities dictate that Nigeria should respond appropriately to challenges in the sub-region, accordingly, beginning with the outbreak of disturbances, first in Liberia and later in Sierra Leone – with potentials for destabilizing the entire sub-region – Nigeria sent peacekeeping troops, within the context of an ECOWAS mandate, later transformed into a United Nations mandate.
