AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT POLICY

Consistent with government’s withdrawal from direct production activities, in the case of agriculture, government embarked on the provision of the required physical and institutional infrastructure to better support our farmers meets the challenges of rapidly increasing food demand. The main strategies were (a) the development of rural feeder roads and other physical infrastructure, including improved storage facilities (b) increased support for research, extension work and delivery of improved packages to the farmer, and (c) market incentives including warranted measures of protection. Special grants (N50 million) were made to the Universities of Agriculture to enhance their contribution.
